Refined & Unhinged
A mother-daughter podcast on womanhood, real talk, and the wild ride of self-discovery. From refined reflections to unhinged confessions—this is womanhood, uncensored. Refined & Unhinged is the unapologetically honest podcast that dives deep into the evolving female experience—hosted by mother-daughter duo Jen Dryden Hess and Ali Stricklin. Jen is an empty nester navigating her Third Act with bold curiosity, while Ali is running multiple businesses and raising two daughters in Los Angeles. Together, they unpack the beautifully chaotic journey of being a woman—no topic off-limits, no filter applied. Each week, you’ll hear raw, intergenerational conversations that span personal growth, self-discovery, sexuality, motherhood, mental health, relationships, wellness, career pivots, financial literacy, and society’s messiest expectations. Sometimes it’s deep. Sometimes it’s hilarious. It’s always authentic. What makes Refined & Unhinged special is our commitment to building a community where women’s stories become bridges. Each episode features relatable experiences that remind you you’re not alone in your journey. By sharing both our vulnerabilities and victories, we’re creating more than just a podcast—we’re fostering a movement of connection that extends beyond the airwaves. Whether you’re a 25-year-old questioning everything or a 65-year-old rewriting the rules, this is your space to feel seen, laugh out loud, and connect with women doing the work (imperfectly) at every stage. Expect guest interviews from experts and everyday women alike, generational hot takes, and sofa-side wine fueled chats. The conversations don’t end when the episode does. Join our thriving community of open-minded, open-hearted women who are embracing the mess, the magic, and everything in between. Ali and her mom, Jen, dig into one of those topics every woman hits at some point — what do you do when a friend keeps coming to you with the same problem, the same chaos, over and over again, and nothing ever changes? Is it okay to say something? Is it okay to walk away?
They get into the real mechanics of how to handle it: the art of the redirect (yes, just change the subject), why timing matters more than you think when it comes to hard conversations, and why bringing something up when someone is mid-spiral almost never works. Ali draws a surprisingly parallel between managing deeply feeling kids and managing deeply feeling adults — turns out, the Dr. Becky approach applies way beyond toddlers.
They also talk about the stuff nobody warns you about: the cost of being everyone's sounding board, why you should never vent about your partner to your friends, the damage that gossip does even when someone "promises" not to repeat it, and why a good therapist will always beat a group text for working through your shit.
What we cover:
How to redirect a friend who's stuck in a loop — without blowing up the friendship
Why hard conversations land better when the other person isn't already spinning
The case for asking "do you have capacity for this right now?" before unloading
Friend breakups: when it's okay to walk away and why it still hurts
Why your friends and family aren't your therapists (and shouldn't be)
The unspoken rule about not talking shit about your partner — or your friends — to other people

What began as a fun challenge turned into a life changing experience, as she committed to taking on the Colorado Trail and backpacking for 6 weeks.

Sleep shouldn’t feel this hard — and yet, for so many of us, it does.
In this episode, Ali Stricklin and Jen Dryden Hess dives into the very real, very relatable struggle of getting quality rest. From years of poor sleep habits to experimenting with every wellness trend imaginable, Je & Alii share what they’ve learned about sleep hygiene, lifestyle choices, and the small changes that actually make a difference.
The conversation explores how everyday factors like alcohol, caffeine, stress, screen time, and inconsistent routines quietly sabotage our sleep quality — even when we think we’re “doing everything right.” Jen also opens up about how technology and sleep-tracking devices can be both helpful and misleading, and why awareness matters more than perfection.

In this episode, Ali & Jen chat about their reactions, takeaways, and feelings after diving into the Let Them theory by Mel Robbins and, naturally, spiral into some hilarious (and humbling) childhood stories where Ali very confidently tested her mom’s patience.
What starts as a conversation about emotional control, expectations, and letting people be who they are quickly turns into a reflection on how deeply a child can test their parent’s will to “Let Them”. From stress and people-pleasing to boundaries, communication, and emotional maturity, this episode unpacks how much energy we waste trying to manage things that were never ours to control in the first place.
They explore what it actually looks like to “let them” in real life. If you’ve ever tried to control the room, your parents, your kids, or literally everyone around you… yeah, us too.

We’re closing out 2025 the only way we know how, honest, reflective, and a little unhinged.
In this episode, Ali & Jen recap the year using Thorn, Rose & Bud and map what’s next with the Keep, Toss, Create framework. What challenged us, what we loved, and what we’re intentionally bringing into 2026 (and what we’re not).
This is a playful but meaningful conversation about growth, boundaries, lessons learned, and refining your life without burning it all down.
If you’re in reflection mode, or ready to be, this episode is for you.

In this week’s episode of Refined & Unhinged, we sit down with psychotherapist Deborah Tsagris for a raw, honest conversation about female pleasure, intimacy, and what actually happens behind closed doors…especially once you throw kids, careers, and real-life chaos into the mix.
We get into everything: how our anatomy shapes our sexual experiences, why self-exploration matters more than most women were ever taught, and the messy, beautiful dynamics of desire, orgasm, and partnership. Deb breaks down the cultural conditioning we carry around sex. We discuss how cultural conditioning shows up in our relationships and why so many women feel disconnected from their own pleasure.
We also talk about the real challenges of balancing parenting and intimacy. How you keep a relationship alive when there are tiny humans knocking at the door, how to talk to your kids about their bodies without making it weird, and why reclaiming your sexuality as a woman is not optional… it’s absolutely essential.
At its core, this episode is about taking shame out of the conversation, communicating honestly, and giving women permission to want more. It’s normal and healthy to want more; more pleasure, more connection, more understanding of your own body and needs.
